A taste of laid-back Sicilian life in Trapani, Italy.

Trapani became quickly one of our favourites, and we ended up staying half a year. The city is nice and small with both the Mediterranean sea for lovely seaside walks and jogging and a mountain for hiking. Local lifestyle is laid-back, people friendly, vegetables good and reasonably priced, and there are lots of lovely stray dogs running around. What more could one ask for?

During the winter and spring Trapani was quiet and we seemed to be the only foreigners around. In May budget flight tourists came and the busier summer season started. The beaches were cleaned from trash and a lot of businesses were put up for tourists. It seemed like a good time for us to move on to some less touristy destinations.

We recommend Trapani in the spring or in the fall to avoid the high season. The winter (January-March) is very cold as there is not necessarily heating available. This winter the temperature dropped down to 7 degrees Celsius and the wind was harsh. It is also a good idea to prepare yourself to the city’s rubbish problem. There are lots of trash in the streets excluding the tourist-polished mountain city of Erice, Trapani’s neighbour, and a huge amount of cars not really caring about pedestrians and air quality.

What to do in Trapani? We simply enjoyed walking around, especially in the waterfront, the historical centre, and hiking to Erice. Trapani is a small city where everything is within walking distance. On the left you can see a little map that can perhaps be of help when you visit Trapani. Thanks to our long walks, we got many dog friends around the city that we visited regularly to say hi. Some of the dogs are cautious about people and keep distance, others enjoy petting, but none of them are angry nor aggressive. Simple pleasures of life are the best.

Hei Ulla,

kävelyreitti Ericeen on polku, joka noudattelee köysirataa. Kauempaa kulkee myös kapea, kiertelevä ja liikenteinen tie. Lyhintä reittiä kiipeäminen kestää ylöspäin 1-3 tuntia kunnosta riippuen. Trapani oli hyvä kaupunki kävellä.

Temples of Angkor, Cambodia

The absolute highlight of our travels in South-East Asia has been meeting our friends. First Martijn and Uswa came to see us in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and now Bill and Betty in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Bill and Betty wanted to see the famous temple area of Angkor so we joined the caravan and headed to Siem Reap. The bus ride was slow even though the roads were pretty good. The 225-kilometre-ride took seven hours.

Finn-Savotta Challenge: The Conclusion

We have been travelling more than five years with our new Finn-Savotta backpacks, Savotta LJK12 and Savotta 906, in dozens of countries all over the world . The backpacks are still in one piece and in usable condition. There are some scratches and bumps in the aluminium structure and the fabric has worn out a bit here and there but nothing major. On the other hand, there were some minor usability challenges.

Dear Mr. Niinistö, I am deeply concerned about the current state of affairs in Finland. We left Finland in 2004 to travel the world. We have been living in 102 countries around the world, and travelled through countries devastated by the US, NATO, and Russia. The last three years we lived in Georgia , which is at war with Russia . There is a ceasefire agreement, but a peace accord was never signed. Russia – the second biggest arms exporter in the world right after the US – benefits from such instability.

Boycott Against Air Europa

Boycott against Air Europa. They trashed Päivi´s backpack and promised refund, but getting it took a year and way too much trouble. Päivi´s backpack received a bit too rough treatment on our flight with Air Europa one year ago, and it broke down. The company promised to refund the damage, as it finally did. But getting the money required dozens of emails, phone calls, and facsimiles. We even had to turn to the European Consumer centre. Here’s the full story why we boycott Air Europa. Our flight was from Salvador, Brazil to Madrid, Spain. When we noticed that Päivi´s backpack had trashed, we filed a baggage claim report right away at Barajas airport. First, we were told to get a replacement bag in Madrid, but unfortunately the luggage shop that Air Europa used, did not have backpacks. Next, we were told to buy a new one from Finland where we were going, and to send the receipt to Air Europa’s Luggage service for refunding.
